About UNV in Tajikistan

History of UNV in Tajikistan

Since 1993, more than 70 Tajik nationals have been posted for international UN Volunteer assignments over the world, while more than 40 internationals have served in the Republic of Tajikistan up to now. At the beginning, there were UN Volunteers working for the DPKO missions in Tajikistan: the United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan (UNMOT: December 1994 - May 2000) and the United Nations Tajikistan Office of Peacebuilding (UNTOP 2000 until 2007) (See further info: http://www.unv.org/en/news-resources/archive/past-annual-reports/annual-report-2000-reaching-out/doc/planting-seeds.html and http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=23393&Cr=tajik&Cr1=#.UuoTCMtDHcs).
The UNV Field Unit (UNV FU / under UNDP’s overall administration) in Tajikistan has been in operation since August 2010. UNV Field Unit manages UN Volunteers who are serving on development and humanitarian assistance assignments in UN agencies.

Key Activities in Tajikistan
  • Providing UN agencies and their implementing partners with cost-effective technical support through international UN Volunteers, and/or national UN Volunteers.
  • Advocating for volunteerism.
  • Promoting volunteering activities with young people in Tajikistan.
  • Supporting UN agencies with UN Online Volunteers.

These volunteers are fully funded by UNICEF, the Government of Swiss, and the Government of Japan.
